The reason so many intelligent people get deceived is that fake astrologers are very good at appearing authentic. They use the right terminology. They wear traditional clothing or religious symbols. Real Vedic astrology does not work this way. It works from a birth chart — a precise mathematical document generated from the exact date, time, and place of your birth — and from the trained interpretation of that chart by someone who has spent years learning what the planetary combinations mean. Understanding this distinction is the foundation of everything that follows.

WARNING SIGN 1 — THEY DO NOT ASK FOR YOUR BIRTH DETAILS

This is the clearest and most reliable test available.

A genuine Vedic astrologer cannot do anything meaningful without your birth information. They need your date of birth, your time of birth, and your place of birth. All three. Without these, there is no Kundli. Without a Kundli, there is no Vedic astrology — only guesswork dressed up as guidance.

Birth time matters more than most people realize. A difference of just two minutes in birth time can shift your Ascendant (Lagna) from one sign to another. That changes the entire chart — the house placements of every planet, the sequence of Dasha periods, the reading of your 7th house for marriage, your 10th house for career. Two people born on the same day with the same date but four minutes apart can have completely different life patterns.

This is why I always ask for a birth certificate or hospital record if there is any doubt about the time. Not because I am being difficult. Because the accuracy of the reading depends on it.

So here is the test: if someone claims to read your future, your chart, your planetary positions, or your Dasha periods without first asking for your date, time, and place of birth — you are not talking to an astrologer. You are talking to someone who is performing.

Some will ask for your name and date of birth only, then proceed confidently. The name is not a Vedic astrology requirement. Some systems use name numerology, which is a different practice entirely. Be clear about what you are paying for.

WARNING SIGN 2 — THEY GUARANTEE RESULTS

No genuine practitioner of any traditional system — Vedic astrology, Jyotish, numerology, or any related field — guarantees specific outcomes.

This is not hedging. It is a fundamental truth about what these systems actually are.

Vedic astrology reveals tendencies, patterns, and timing. A Kundli shows the energies and karma you were born with. It shows which planetary periods are active in your life right now, and what types of experiences those periods tend to bring. A skilled astrologer can tell you: “Your 7th house lord is in the 12th in a difficult Dasha — this is a period when relationships tend to be tested.” They cannot tell you: “Your husband will come back to you within 21 days.”

Anyone who says the latter is not reading a chart. They are telling you what you want to hear so you will pay them.

The “guaranteed results” formulation is also legally significant. In India, promising supernatural outcomes in exchange for money has been challenged under consumer protection and fraud laws. That fraudsters still use it openly is largely a function of the reluctance of victims to report — the shame of having been deceived keeps people silent.

I have never guaranteed a result in 15 years of practice. I tell clients what the chart shows, what the Dasha timing suggests, what remedies may support a better outcome, and what a realistic timeline looks like. That is what a reading is. The outcome still depends on the person’s own choices and actions.

WARNING SIGN 3 — THEY TELL YOU THAT YOU ARE UNDER BLACK MAGIC OR A CURSE

This is the most common fraud script in Indian astrology, and it is devastatingly effective because it targets the most vulnerable moment in a person’s life.

The setup goes like this. You arrive with a problem — a broken relationship, financial trouble, health issues, a prolonged period of bad luck. The astrologer listens, nods gravely, and then delivers the diagnosis: “You are under kala jadoo (black magic). Someone in your family or workplace has had this done to you. This is why everything has been going wrong.”

You feel a flash of recognition. Things have been going wrong. The explanation fits the emotional shape of your situation.

Then comes the solution. “I can remove this. But it requires a specific ritual. The materials cost ₹X,000. The ritual takes Y days. After that, the curse will be lifted, and your life will change.”

This is not astrology. This is fraud.

Pitra Dosha, Graha Dosha, Mangal Dosha — these are real planetary and karmic patterns that show up in birth charts and affect specific areas of life. The difference is that a genuine practitioner identifies these things through the birth chart, explains what they mean in the chart, and prescribes specific, proportionate remedies — not a paid ritual with escalating fees.

The pattern to watch for: black magic diagnosis followed by a paid remedy, especially if the practitioner moves quickly to the solution before you have shared your birth details or they have shown you anything in writing.

I have seen clients who paid between ₹50,000 and ₹5,00,000 to have “black magic removed.” In every case I have investigated, the charts showed real but ordinary planetary afflictions — difficult Dasha periods, Saturn in challenging positions, Rahu-Ketu axis issues. WARNING SIGN 4 — THEY ASK FOR MORE MONEY AFTER THE FIRST PAYMENT

This is called the “escalating commitment” tactic, and it works because of a basic human psychology: once someone has paid for something, they are deeply reluctant to accept that they were wrong to do so.

The script: You pay for an initial consultation or remedy. A few weeks later, the astrologer contacts you — the work is progressing, but there is a complication—a planetary obstruction. A more powerful entity is resisting.


The ritual needs to be repeated, or a more expensive ritual is required. Could you arrange ₹X more?

This cycle can continue indefinitely. I have spoken to people who paid 8, 9, 10 times to the same person before finally stopping. By that point they had paid several lakhs. Nothing had changed except their bank balance.

The rule is simple: a legitimate consultation has a clear, upfront fee. A legitimate remedy prescription has a clear cost — usually for specific materials, in amounts proportionate to the remedy. If someone keeps asking for more money, stop paying.

The one exception worth understanding: some genuine sadhanas do involve multiple stages, and a practitioner might prescribe a sequence of remedies over time. But in those cases, the full scope is disclosed upfront, the costs are explained in advance, and each stage connects logically to the last. It does not feel like a drip of escalating demands.

WARNING SIGN 5 — THEY CANNOT EXPLAIN THEIR REASONING

A real astrologer can show their work.

Before you pay anyone for a consultation, do ten minutes of research.

Look for Google reviews — not just the star rating, but the content of individual reviews. Do the reviews mention specific things the astrologer got right? Do they mention the astrologer’s name? Are there responses from the astrologer showing they are engaged with their clients? A 4.9-star average across 1,200+ reviews is not the same as ten five-star reviews from accounts created last month.

Look for evidence that the person has been practicing for as long as they claim. Fifteen years of practice leaves traces — online mentions, community presence, clients who can be contacted. Zero history combined with impressive claims is a warning sign.

Look at how they present themselves online. Do they have a working website with clear information about their approach, their background, and their fees? Or is it a WhatsApp number with a profile photo and no other presence?
