What Is Vedic Name Compatibility?
Name compatibility is the first thing I check when someone comes to me with a relationship question. Not because it gives a final answer. It does not. But it gives me the first signal — the Namank, the name number in Vedic astrology — and from that I can see which planet governs each person's name energy.
Most name calculators online use Western numerology — Pythagorean numerology from 6th century BCE Greece. Vedic name compatibility uses the same 1–9 number cycle but connects each Namank to a specific planetary ruler from Jyotish. That planetary connection is what makes the reading meaningful rather than generic.
When I look at a couple's Namank, I am not just comparing two numbers. I am asking: are the planets that govern these names friendly with each other in Vedic astrology? If yes, the relationship has natural ease. If the planets are enemies or neutral, it does not mean the relationship is wrong — it means it requires more awareness.
In fifteen years of practice, I have seen Namank 3 and Namank 6 couples who seem effortlessly connected. I have seen Namank 8 and Namank 9 pairs who love each other deeply but fight constantly without understanding why. The name number explains the friction. It does not create it.
How Namank Is Calculated
Every letter in your name corresponds to a number from 1 to 9. The cycle repeats — A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, F=6, G=7, H=8, I=9, then J=1 again through to Z.
You add the values of every letter in your name and reduce the total to a single digit. That single digit is your Namank.
Example: The name PRIYA — P=7, R=9, I=9, Y=7, A=1 — total is 33 — 3+3 = 6. Namank is 6. The planetary ruler of 6 is Venus (Shukra). If your partner's Namank is 3 (Jupiter), these two planets are natural allies in Vedic astrology — warmth, creativity, and shared values come easily to this combination.
The 9 Namanks and Their Planetary Rulers
This is the core of Vedic name compatibility. Each number has a planetary ruler, and each planet carries a distinct relationship energy. Understanding your planetary ruler tells you far more than a percentage alone.
The compatibility between two Namanks depends on the relationship between their ruling planets. Jupiter (3) and Venus (6) are natural allies — ease, creativity, and shared values come naturally. Saturn (8) and Mars (9) are planetary enemies — both are strong-willed and neither yields easily. Knowing this is more useful than a percentage score. A 78% score tells you something is working. If you know your Moon nakshatra from your birth chart, check whether your name's first syllable appears in the same row. This is where most people have the most questions. Let me be direct about how name compatibility fits into marriage astrology.
For Arranged Marriage
Name compatibility is a useful first signal — never the whole answer. The correct sequence in Vedic arranged-marriage astrology is: Namank check first, then Gotra verification, then Mangal Dosha analysis, then full Ashtakoot kundali matching (36-point scoring), and finally Navamsa chart review.
If the Namank score is high and the kundali matching also comes back strong, proceed with confidence. If the Namank is low but the kundali shows excellent compatibility, do not let the name number stop you. The kundali always carries more weight.
For Love Marriage
If you are already in a relationship and checking your score, understand that the number reflects the natural planetary energy between your names. It does not reflect what you have built together.
A couple with a 55% name compatibility score who have built trust and shared values over three years has something no calculator can measure. The score is a starting point — not a verdict. That said, if your score is low and you have been experiencing persistent friction, the Namank can help explain the source of it. Named friction is easier to address.
What Your Score Actually Means
The percentage combines the Namank comparison with the planetary friendship or enmity between the two ruling planets. Here is how to read the ranges in Vedic terms.
Name Change as a Vedic Remedy
This is a real practice in Vedic astrology. If your Namank is creating planetary friction — for instance, if your Namank is 8 (Saturn) and you want to shift to a more Venus-aligned energy — changing the spelling of your name can change your Namank. Adding or removing a letter, or changing a vowel, produces a different number sum.
I recommend this only after a full chart analysis. The name you have carried for most of your life has already embedded its energy in your chart. A change should be considered alongside your Mahadasha period and your 7th house strength — not done impulsively based on a calculator score.
