What Kundali Matching Actually Covers
Most people know kundali matching as "matching the stars" before marriage. The Vedic system behind it is more specific than that. It is called Ashtakoota Milan — a compatibility analysis across eight categories, totalling 36 Gunas (points).
The Eight Kootas — What Each One Measures
Nadi and Bhakoot together account for 15 of the 36 points. A mismatch in either flags up as a dosha. But both have cancellation conditions. Most free tools do not tell you this.
What the Guna Score Means — and What It Does Not

The standard guidance says 18 or above is acceptable for marriage. This is a useful rule of thumb, not a law. The score is one input. The consultation is the analysis.

Every major platform — AstroSage, Astroyogi, AskGanesha — runs an automated Guna calculator. They are all doing the same calculation. None of them go deeper than the Guna score.
Layer 01
Dasha-Antardasha Timing
The Dasha system governs which planetary period you are living through. A couple with a strong Guna score in Sade Sati will face enormous pressure in the first three years. A couple with a lower Guna score entering a Venus-Jupiter Dasha alignment will often thrive. The timing of the marriage matters as much as the matching.
Real Case — Mumbai, 2022
A family was ready to reject a 19/36 Guna match. When I checked both Dashas, he was entering Jupiter Mahadasha in eight months. She was mid-Venus Antardasha. I advised them to proceed — but marry after his Dasha shift. Three years later, they have a stable home and a child. The Guna score told them nothing useful. The timing told me everything.

Navamsa D9 Chart Analysis
The D9 Navamsa is a divisional chart specifically for marriage and dharma. It shows what married life will actually look like, regardless of the Lagna chart. I analyse three things in the D9 for both partners:
- 7th house lord in the Navamsa — strength of the spouse indicator
- Venus placement — the planet of love, relationships and marital happiness
- Upapada Lagna — the sensitive point governing the spouse and quality of the marital bond

Dosha Exceptions and Cancellations
Most families see 'Nadi Dosha' or 'Manglik Dosha' on a free tool and panic. What the tool does not tell them is that both doshas have classical cancellation conditions.
- Nadi Dosha cancellations: same gotra, same nakshatra in different pada, Jupiter in Nadi-neutralising position, different Nadi in Navamsa
- Manglik cancellations: Mars in own sign or exalted (Capricorn), Jupiter aspecting Mars, mutual Manglik
- Bhakoot cancellations: lords of both Moon signs are the same planet or mutual friends
A dosha that cancels is not a dosha. I check every applicable cancellation before giving any guidance on severity.

My Kundali Score Is Low — What Do I Do?
The honest answer is: a low score is not a reason to stop. It is a reason to look more carefully.
There are three situations where I commonly see a "low" score that is not alarming once analysed:
- The specific kootas that scored low are the less critical ones (Varna, Vashya, Tara), while the high-weight kootas (Nadi, Bhakoot, Graha Maitri) are strong
- One or more doshas have classical cancellations — the effective score after cancellations is higher
- The D9 Navamsa shows very strong compatibility that overrides the Guna surface reading
What I will not do is give you a number and leave you with it. A low Guna score with no context and no remedies is what free tools do. A consultation gives you a path forward.
Remedies I Prescribe for Dosha
- Nadi Dosha (without cancellation): Mahamrityunjaya Mantra jaap, Mahadaan, specific puja before marriage
- Manglik Dosha (confirmed, not cancelled): Kumbh Vivah — symbolic marriage to absorb Mars energy before the wedding
- Bhakoot Dosha: Venus-strengthening remedies, Friday fasting, specific gemstones based on the individual chart
- Low Graha Maitri: Communication-focused remedies — improving Mercury and Moon strength in both charts
The remedy is always specific to your individual charts. Prescribing the same remedy for every Nadi Dosha case is not Vedic astrology. It is a shortcut.

Love Marriage vs Arranged Marriage — Different Analysis
Kundali matching for a love marriage and for an arranged marriage are not the same consultation.
In an arranged marriage, the family is deciding whether to proceed. The analysis focuses on compatibility indicators and any serious long-term concerns.

The 14-Guna Match That Worked
A Pune family came to me in 2021 with a kundali match of 14 out of 36 Gunas. Two free tools had told them to reject the match. The Guna score had told them nothing about timing. The timing was everything.
The Love Marriage With Family Concerns
A couple from Surat came to me in 2023. They were in a relationship for three years. The boy was Manglik; the girl was not. Her parents were worried. What is the minimum Guna score needed for marriage?
Classically, 18 out of 36 is the accepted minimum. But this is a guideline, not a rigid rule. A score below 18 with strong D9 compatibility and no unresolved doshas can still be a viable match. Do not make this decision based on the number alone.
Is kundali matching necessary for love marriages?
It is not legally required. But it is genuinely useful — not because a bad score means you should not marry, but because the analysis tells you what challenges you are likely to face and when. For love marriages, it also helps when family approval is needed.
What is Nadi Dosha, and how serious is it?
Nadi Dosha occurs when both partners have the same Nadi (Aadi, Madhya, or Antya). It carries the heaviest weight — 8 points. Classical texts associate it with health issues and progeny difficulty. However, it has multiple cancellation conditions. I always check these before flagging Nadi Dosha as a concern.
Can Manglik Dosha be cancelled?
Yes. Manglik Dosha has several classical cancellation conditions — Mars in its own sign, Mars exalted (Capricorn), Jupiter aspecting Mars, and mutual Manglik. Whether a specific placement is cancelled depends on the individual chart. This is exactly why a consultation matters over a binary tool label.
Can kundali matching be done without birth time?
Without birth time, I use the Surya Kundali (solar chart) which still gives reliable Guna Milan and good compatibility indicators. It is not ideal, but meaningful analysis is still possible. Tell me upfront if you do not have the exact time.
Do you offer kundali matching for NRI clients?
Yes. All consultations are via WhatsApp — written analysis, voice notes, or video call. I have worked with clients in the UK, USA, UAE, Canada, Australia, Singapore and Malaysia. Time zones are not a barrier.
Can a marriage fail even with a high Guna score?
Yes. And I have seen it happen. A high Guna score measures specific compatibility dimensions. It does not account for Dasha timing, D9 strength, individual character, or the choices a couple makes over time. The kundali is a map. How you travel is still up to you.
How long does a kundali matching consultation take?
I usually deliver the written analysis within 24–48 hours of receiving both sets of birth details. The voice or video discussion is typically 20–30 minutes. Complex cases with multiple doshas may take slightly longer.
